Birds of a Feather

Friday Five: Heatwave Edition July 19, 2013

1. It is SO hot here.  SO HOT.  I realize that readers from Texas might have very little sympathy for us, but we are dying here!  Well, I am.  C says, “this is great weather.”  But really, it is never a good sign when it’s above 80 degrees before 8 am.

2. First full week of work – check!

3. I have a complaint to register with McDonald’s.  (McDonald’s, are you listening??)  I, as we all know, am a bit of a tea addict, and in the summer, I like iced tea (unsweet).  McDonald’s sells – or did sell – pretty decent unsweet tea, and for just 99 cents (any size). It was a match made in heaven, me being a cheap tea drinker and all.  BUT, the last few times I have ordered unsweet tea at McDonald’s, they have served me instant tea that just isn’t as good.  Not cool, Mickey-D’s.

4.We are in a bit of a whole-roasting fish phase for weekend dinners.  And it is great.

5. I’ll leave you with a quote from one of the best movies of all time. If you haven’t watched What About Bob? yet this summer, you really should.

What I’d really like to do is put the greatness of this man in perspective.

I think there’s really only 3 names.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer, ah, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, probably, and … Leo Marvin. (Bob Wiley)

Friday Five: Life is just a bowl of cherries! July 12, 2013

1. We had a great time with my sister M this past week.  Mostly I had to be at work, but I played (excused) hooky on Tuesday and we went out to the country to go cherry-picking with our cousins.  Ten pounds of sour cherries (our freezer is now full) and two pounds of cherries later, we climbed down from the ladders, went home, and had a big “pitting party” followed by a rousing round of Disney Cranium.

2. Also, I recently saw some pluots at Reading Terminal Market.  Pluot Season!

3. While we were out and about with M, we tried out the new location of Little Baby’s Ice Cream over in West Philly, and discovered their great “tasting flight” deal: six (smallish) scoops of their crazy ice creams for only $6 (perfect to share).  And you get to try so many flavors! My favorite was Grape Grape Nut. No wait. Roasted coconut lime. Hmm…it was all delicious – too hard to choose…

4. I may eventually start biking, but for now I have one of the most pleasant walking commutes imaginable.  It’s a 15 – 20 minute walk through Fitler Square, along the river trail, across a bridge, and through a park that is under a railroad trestle. Hard to complain.

5. Not sure if we’ll make it, but there’s a Bastille Day celebration this weekend that involves someone shouting from the tower of Eastern State Penetentiary: “Let them eat Tastykakes” as they throw thousands of Tastykakes into the crowd. Butterscotch Krimpets galore!

Love Me Tender

Love Me Tender

1. Happy anniversary to America (237th) and to us (5th). We’re celebrating over dinner tonight, at a BYO just out of town, and probably taking a day trip to Amish country tomorrow. Also, I would be remiss if I did not mention the beautiful bouquet of sunflowers and peonies that I came home to (C arranged it himself, and it’s lovely – I’m spoiled!)

2. Yesterday we celebrated the 4th day beford the 5th of July out in Gilbertsville with some of my extended family. The day involved kayaking (the ladies), fishing (the men), tennis (co-ed), and a delicious Greek dinner. Oh, and Disney Cranium – so obviously, fun was had by all!

3. We’re not Greek, but in addition to yesterday’s dinner, I also discovered this past week a new favorite food, Halloumi. Halloumi is a Greek cheese that you can grill (or fry!) – we really enjoyed it in this summer couscous salad (highly recommended) and were excited to find it at Trader Joe’s.

4. So happy to be working again…and at the same time, so happy for the weekend! I’m taking a day or so off next week since my sister M will be in town, so the first 5-day work week will be a big shock to the system when it finally arrives…

5. I quite enjoy watching the lightning bugs on our back patio and on evening strolls, but getting to watch C get so much pleasure out of watching the lightning bugs is sort of like a two-fer! The other night we went for a walk to watch the sunset over the river, and when we got back to the house, he immediately turned off all the lights…it turns out he had caught a few fireflies in his hand, and wanted to sit and watch them dance around from the comfort of our couch.

…it’s off to work I go!

On Monday, I did something that I haven’t done since sometime last June – I got out of bed at a respectable hour (actually, I usually do that), showered (that’s a little more hit or miss), and left the house before 8, to go to work. I’ve been looking for a job that’s a great fit for about a year (since we moved, although I spent the first few months looking for furniture rather than for a job) – and I finally found one. Better still, it’s just a mile away from our house and less than half a mile away from C’s office, even though it’s not at the same university.

It’s been quite an adjustment schedule-wise, in that for the last year I have been able to do what I want, when I want, 24 hours a day. Also, I could wear a t-shirt, running shorts, and sneakers all day long and nobody would care. But aside from that, I am enjoying being back at the office – both for the mental/social stimulation, and also because Philly has been experiencing a bizarre hot and rainy season, which would leave me feeling quite cooped up in the home if I didn’t have anywhere to go during the day.

I am very thankful that I had the good fortune to fit in so much travel (Texas, New York, Europe, DC and North Carolina) in the last month before going back to work (and for the holiday tomorrow which makes this a 4-day work week)!
